Conditions + Medications - what's it got to do with tattoos?
Hey friends!
You may have noticed in my form, I do ask if you're on any medications. It can be very personal, so why do I and others ask?
Though your tattoo artists should be informed about their tattoo process; wearing gloves, sterilisation, cleaning and disposal methods. We do not have the training or education to properly advise a customer on their health condition.
So it's always important to approach a trusted health care professional if you have concerns about how receiving a tattoo may be affected by any conditions you have, or medications you take.
Some main things that nay affect you, that could affect your tattoo process and healing include:
Acne medications
Antibiotics
Blood thinners
Chronic skin conditions
Anti-rejection drugs
Pregnancy
Immunocompromised Individuals
Acne Medication (Accutane, Minomycin (or any other Tetracycline-related medication)
Acne medication can make your skin hyper sensitive. The process of getting tattooed may be more painful, and as a tattoo is healing your skin may also be sensitive and reactive. Sometimes you may not present side effects during a process but during the healing, vice versa. Your tattoos can scar up, and in some cases develop keloid scars. Removal is possible, but this can also lead to further keloids developing. Health care providers may suggest waiting six months to a year for it to be out of your system.
Antibiotics
Not all antibiotics cause skin reactions, however some people may experience unusual skin reactions. Usually when prescribed antibiotics, you body is fighting infection. Getting a tattoo, essentially an open wound which makes you susceptible to germs, bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. So your immune system is WORKING, which can delay the healing process.
Blood thinners
Though bleeding is normal during a tattoo process, blood thinners can cause you to bleed more during the process. This can effect the outcome of your tattoo (ie, bleeding more can mean it's harder for ink to be put in the skin), and it can mean you're more susceptible to infections. You may not be able to receive a tattoo, or you may just have to do the tattoo in smaller sessions.
Chronic skin collection
This can include; psoriasis, vitiligo, pigmented lesions. Getting a tattoo on or near a chronic skin condition, can result in a flare up or cause Kobner phenomenon. Kobner phenomenon is when the the skin will flare up and inflamed due to trauma.
Anti-rejection drugs
Usually taken after receiving a transplant, the drugs you take after can result in a weaker immune system, so you're less able to fight off infections or issues. It's important that your overall health is strong enough to withstand the stress of getting tattooed and if the drugs may interfere with the healing.
Pregnancy
As it's popped up a couple of times, infection is a huge thing while getting tattooed. If contaminated or dirty needles are used, you could be at risk of getting bloodborne infections. Bloodborne infections such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Particularly for hepatitis B and HIV, there is medium to high change either can easily pass on the infection to her baby at birth. Babies with hepatitis B then have a high risk of developing a lifelong infection.
There's also little information is available about the safety of skin dyes and ingredients used for tattooing during pregnancy. This may affect development of main organs during first trimester, brain development or can cause miscarriage or stillbirth.
Similarly with breastfeeding, there is a risk of infection being passed to the baby. Though it's not strictly prohibited, but it's generally strongly discouraged by medical professionals.
Immunocompromised Individuals
This can include: heart conditions, diabetes, inherited/acquired blood disorder. Generally it's a case to case basis for individuals, you want to make sure you're in good health for your body to handle the process and healing of a tattoo. As with having a chronic condition, it may take to heal, or if you have a higher risk of infections.
For the extra nerds, there's this online book you can read:
Do your research, and chat to your health care providers to make decisions about enquiring with an artist. It's always super important to make sure you're in good health for the process and healing of your tattoos!

Checklist of character traits prone to inconsistency:
Heyo, quick one today. It’s great to give a lot of detail to character traits and personality quirks, but they aren’t real people, you’ve made them up, and thus, might not have a perfect memory for how you’ve described them, or drawn them in the past.
So before you post or publish, do yourself a favor and make sure the following are consistent throughout your story, if applicable:
If they’re left or right handed, or ambidextrous.
Which side their hair parts on.
Which side their scars are on (especially facial scars).
Which eye has the patch or is just missing, and how much or little the character fiddles with it.
Missing glasses and how prone a character is to forgetting them or anal about cleaning them. Glasses are always dirty (do they clean them with a proper cloth or the edge of their shirt?).
Which side broken, missing, or bandaged fingers are on.
If they’re wearing a cast, how it inhibits their mobility.
If they have a leg or foot injury, how severely they limp.
If their clothing takes damage, when/how they replace it or repair it, and whether or not they’re wandering around town accidentally covered in blood or grease or all-purpose flour.
Which injuries they sustain that should still be bothering them, like pulled shoulders, bruises, shin splints, paper cuts, sun burns, cramps, carpal tunnel, arthritis, tinnitus, road rash, and stubbed toes or pinched fingers.
Which side of their body buttons, rings, bracelets, pins, brooches, badges, or name tags are on.
If they’re wearing gloves or mittens, when they take them off or how their mobility is impacted by them.
How mobility changes if their fingernails are short and stubby or long, or artificial, like typing, eating, and grabbing objects.
If they have a wheelchair, how they transition out of it, into it, and move within it, like getting dressed or putting on shoes, or lifting themselves up into cars and back down—and how public spaces do and don’t accommodate them.
If they have prosthetics, how they maintain them, how they might sound different than someone else—prosthetic feet for runners won’t sound the same as sneakers.
If they need crutches, a walker, a scooter, or a cane, and how the world accommodates them.
If they're colorblind, how it impacts their day to day and descriptions compared to other narrators.
Jewelry often jingles. Pandora bracelets are loud af especially if they’re on your dominant hand when you try to write on a desk. Charm necklaces jingle if you bounce and some earrings can jingle when you shake your head.
Where tattoos are and if they take measures to hide them and how.
An aside about characters with tattoos (from experience):
If they’re new, they still hurt for at least a week depending on the level of detail.
Tattoos are basically mega sunburns and fresh ink should either be covered from the sun or, once it’s healed enough that the skin isn’t broken, heavily sun-screened to preserve coloration. Newer ink is very noticeable in sunlight, just like a healing sunburn.
Black ink tends to turn a bit green over time and sharp details blur. Tattoos are beholden to the skin they’re on, and how it stretches or sags.
Tattoos stink, as plasma and other fluids build up under the wrap (that can either be straight plastic wrap or a dermal cover akin to the stuff used for burn victims).
Tattoos can burn and ache if they’re on the legs when you stand, as blood and your body weight settles back into place.
Tattoos do very weird things to your body depending on the amount of ink and the time it took to design. Your skin peels kind of, but not exactly, like a sunburn, and every artist has their own tips for aftercare.
If the ink is over thin skin (I have one that ends over my ankle) the ink may have a texture left behind, a raised puffy bump, that fades over time.
A character receiving a tattoo might have this kind of bell curve effect, where it hurts really bad at the start, until adrenaline kicks in and dampens it, and then again once their adrenaline runs out. There is no pain quite like tattoo pain and everyone describes them differently. I like to think of them as itching a bug bite on a sunburn, dialed up to 11.
According to my past artists, women almost universally handle the pain better than men. I have definitely suffered other injuries worse than tattoo pain.
Fine linework hurts more than broad stroke coloring or shading, because the distribution of pressure is wider with more needles packed together. The larger the needle bundle, the less it hurts. All of mine are water color and the *splash* effect for the illusion of water drops uses a single needle and it’s always the most painful part.
Feel free to tag any that I missed!

I wanted to share the tattoo I did yesterday!!
I really enjoyed the process🥹🫶 My “normal” art is generally a lot more detailed and time-consuming than these fanarts…something I genuinely LOVE is just spending lots of time focusing on the small details & forgetting everything else.
I’m overall really happy with how this turned out, I’ve been practicing A LOT😳 but even so, pork skin isn’t the same as a living, breathing human. I think this design might have been a BIT too complicated to be my first one but oh well…I learned a lot and pushing myself off the deep end is always how I learn best😆😆😤🙏
#in the future tbh what I want to do is realism and famous paintings etc#but tbh whatever bc I just love drawing😫💓#anyways would you want to see more of these??????????? like update on my process??#or just keep this blog as an eloise worship center😆#(I vote for that)#personal#and before anyone comes at me…in spain apprenticeships don’t really exist…#I go to a studio they’re all muy majos and they help me a lot…#give me lots of advice monitor my progress etc etc#but at the end of the day they’re just like distant mentors I hang out with😆😆 have to do it all on my own…#so I’ve been collecting lots of victims and hopefully over the next month I can do a few more😇🙏#it’s a strange process tbh#but I also had a few studios show interest in hiring me once I get more experience#so we’ll see if they follow through!!!!!!!🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏#also I’ve been very flustered/nervous in the last week bc of this so#if I’ve been weird about responding etc etc THIS IS WHY😭😭😭😭😭😭😫#I’m slowly trying to catch up….🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰#also my last note is that my super sweetie pie but somewhat incompetent bc took the picture of me tattooing😆😆😆#I take what I can get…

Out curiosity what’s your honest opinion of people getting there girlfriend/boyfriend name tattooed on a them?? Because honestly I think it’s bad luck.
haha there's definitely a superstition among artists that once you get your partner's / friend's name tattooed on you, the relationship is doomed. The craziest real life example I have of that happening is when I gave matching tattoos to a boyfriend and girlfriend who then went through a break-up so messy just a week later that it literally led to her getting a restraining order against him, which was NUTS (she's doing a lot better now tho which is great to see)
But also it's one of those things where it's just superstitions, a tattoo is a tattoo. I do generally recommend that people who get matching tattoos with their besties / tattoos of their partner's names / etc. do all the proper amount of thinking over it to ensure that it's not a last minute spur-of-the-moment decision and that their relationship is generally stable enough that they don't see it going anywhere any time soon. One thing I've been seeing people do more of is get 'matching' tattoos that are still perfectly fine on their own, so if the relationship does fall through, they still have a tattoo that stands on its own with its own meaning without needing the other half to make sense.
Shit happens though, tattoo or no. If you really want to get tattooed together as a fun outing and bonding experience between you and a partner / friend / etc. then ultimately it's your choice and superstitions be damned. Just make sure you weigh the pros and cons properly and that all the people involved are going in fully informed and aren't just getting dragged along into it! It can be hard to draw boundaries regarding something like matching tattoos because it usually involves at least one person being super excited to do it and it can be hard to say no to that, but at the end of the day it's your body that you have to live with for the rest of your life, so you need to make the decisions that are right for you and your skin (•̀ᴗ•́)و

Reassurance for Artists that struggle to design characters with tattoos!!!
you're not bad at art, you're not crazy, this shit is UNREASONABLY HARD
don't believe me?
I've been doing art for nearly a decade, mostly character design and portraits, and I AM A TATTOO ARTIST
this is literally my work ↓↓↓↓
and yet drawing tattoos on characters is like a million times more difficult than tattooing an actual human body
so, yeah if it's something you sturggle with don't sweat, it's a tough thing to nail.
(this is meant to be reassuring, but this is also 1000% a rant bc I'm trying to draw Karlach's tattoos and it's just taking foreveerrrr)

Hello! I was wondering if you’d be willing to take commissions someday 👀. No pressure tho! I just love your art so much
The short answer: "not at the moment, but it is very possible in the future'!
The slightly longer answer: I would have to figure out a good pricing and payment system! PD-MDZS is also where most of my free time goes, so until my life settles down a bit, I would be on the slow side to complete them.
#Ask#Even longer answer: I technically do - but it's been people I know irl asking and handing me physical money/bank transfers.#I'm working on one right now but the tricky part with pricing is that they want the physical copy of it - which is different to online comm#Fun fact: I have gotten a fair amount of commissions from a local hobbiest quilting club.#They show me their pintrest inspiration board and tell me size specifications and I draw out patterns on parchment paper.#I am probably being undervalued by a group of 50-60 year old women but they call me handsome and say I'm doing a good job so...#There was also someone a while back who asked about a tattoo design and I was *so* enthusiastic but I just got too busy to commit.#I truly do appreciate people asking - It is *extremely* flattering that you like my art enough to want to commission something!#I will re-examine my situation in a few months! Someday really is the keyword here; I think I'd have a lot of fun with it!#(All the money would go back into buying more artbooks and supplies too! What a dream!)#Through this blog I've gotten to know a few people who do commissions for a living who I will probably pester for pricing advice#Time really is the only barrier for me right now B*(

Help! All These Boring, Ugly Bitches Won't Hang Out With Me
Care and Feeding, Slate, 23 January 23:
Dear Care and Feeding: I live in the very lonely overlap of a Venn diagram, and I need help figuring out how to fix it. To keep it short, I’m a mom who was on the fence about having kids, so I’m not a very ‘mom-y’ mom. My kid isn’t my life or my identity, and while I think I’m a caring and attentive parent, I’m not the primary parent, and I like it that way. I lost most of my non-parent friends when I had my kid. However, my appearance and interests still very much scream “non-parent.” My kid is off-putting to the people most like me (many are overtly judgmental), but my looks and lifestyle are off-putting to other moms (for example, I prioritize my appearance, have a lot of tattoos, and value my work). This has left me very lonely and isolated. Finding friends as an adult is so hard, so please don’t suggest “finding my people” as I’m very extroverted and have been trying to make new friends for years. It’s not working. If I’m honest, I think my childless friends think I’m stupid for having a kid, while my mom acquaintances are jealous of my appearance and judge my choices. It really sucks. —The Worst Venn Diagram
Dear The Worst Venn Diagram,
Holy shit, a mom ... but with tattoos? Is that even possible? You think you've heard everything at a gig like this, but then someone as incredible as you comes along with such an unusual life story! What a remarkable woman you are.
I can see why it would be difficult for someone as hot and interesting as you to make meaningful connections when you yourself are so special and have a lot of tattoos, and moms are always so ugly and boring and worthless and don't have any tattoos, let alone a lot of them. It might help take the sting off to reframe it this way: it's actually a much bigger bummer that all those sad, frumpy mommy-bots are missing out on an amazing opportunity to befriend a mom with tattoos. Can you imagine how enriched their lives would be if they could get over themselves for just one minute and try to understand you as a person, rather than making a bunch of generalizations and assumptions based on surface-level observations? But here they are, writing you off as soon as they see how beautiful and covered in tattoos you are when you walk around with your important briefcase from work. It's really their loss.
You're practically a unicorn! I mean, okay — unicorn is hyperbole. But you get what I'm saying! You're probably one of a handful of women anywhere who has a kid and also cares about the way she looks, and when you add in the fact that you work and have just so, so many tattoos? I don't know, unicorn might not be far off.
In light of that, you've set for yourself a really hard task here. It's not going to be made easier by the fact that the dull and homely stay-at-home moms who stupidly chose to contribute nothing worthwhile to society are being so judgmental about the way you live your life as a gorgeous, professional cool girl who just happens to have a kid. You have such a neat and fun lifestyle and other women don't! Why should you be punished for being a valuable person who, more importantly, values herself, unlike the other moms, who look like absolute shit and never have anything interesting to say and don't have tattoos and are so mean and critical of your choices and the way you look?
Never forget this: you are exceptional. It's not such a mystery that you've been trying so unsuccessfully to make friends for so long. Of course you can't "find your people." There are none. You're a sexy mom with tattoos and a job, and that's always going to be hard for the two kinds of women on earth to understand, whether they're the kind of woman who is a judgy, child-free asshole or the other kind of woman: a jealous, kid-obsessed mommy zombie.
You are one of one — wild and precious and brave and free and so, so pretty, and with so many tattoos. You must never let motherhood define you — only everyone else.
#advice#bad advice#slate#care and feeding#parenting#moms#motherhood#tattoos#why this lady can't make friends is one of the world's great mysteries and we may never solve it
